Setting up Horstmann/Secure Heating

The Secure brand thermostat and boiler receiver are z-wave devices which have to be paired and set up in a specific way with nCube.

The boiler receiver can be used for heating and/or hot water control and is compatible with most boilers - check the Secure/Horstmann website and instructions.

The two devices can be paired with nCube in either order.

Pairing the boiler receiver:

  1. Initially the LED should be flashing red indicating that no radio connection exists (refer to reset method below if not flashing red)
  2. Within nCube select '+' next to the Devices menu and then select the Z-Wave option.  A blue message will appear: "Ready to include".
  3. Whilst this message is shown (60 seconds timeout) press and hold both white buttons down until the LED flashes green.
  4. After a few seconds the nCube app will show that the new device has been included.

Pairing the thermostat:

  1. Set switch 1 on the rear to up.
  2. Turn the dial till 'L' is shown.
  3. Within nCube select '+' next to the Devices menu and then select the Z-Wave option.  A blue message will appear: "Ready to include".
  4. Whilst this message is shown (60 seconds timeout) click the dial.
  5. The display will show Lp once pairing has started.
  6. After a few seconds the nCube app will show that the new device has been included.
  7. As the thermostat is battery powered it sleeps for 5 minute periods and pairing does not always complete the first time round (warning triangle may be visible in nCube).  Turning the dial to 'n' and clicking will force the thermostat to talk to nCube - 'nP' will be displayed.  It is possible to repeat 'n' several times to speed it up.
  8. Remember to set switch 1 back to the down position again.

Once both the boiler receiver and thermostat are paired to the nCube the final step is to finish the configuration.  As it is possible to have multiple thermostats monitoring room temperature in different rooms, one has to be marked as the 'Main' thermostat to control the boiler.

  1. Find the relevant thermostat in nCube
  2. Click edit
  3. Tick the 'mark as main' tickbox
  4. This will create a software link between the thermostat and the boiler.  As this requires sending the configuration to the thermostat it can take 5 minutes whilst wiating for the thermostat to wake up (battery saving).  Selecting 'n' can be equally be used to speed up this process too.

Test the Hot Water and Heating controls - always remember there can be up to a 5 minute delay for the Heating.  Hot Water control will be instant.

The thermostat will still control the boiler directly even if the nCube is powered off.

Reset:

To reset the boiler receiver go into the nCube app, open the menu (top left icon), select Settings then select 'Exclude z-wave devices'.  A blue message will show saying 'Ready to exclude'. Whilst this is displayed (1 minute duration) press and hold both white buttons on the boiler receiver until LED flashes red.

To reset the thermostat, push switch 1 up, turn the dial to 'P' and click twice and once succesful the display will show 'Pp'.
